Teflon, why use it on trico wiper blades?
INTRODUCTION
Teflon, which is also called Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a plastic that many people don't know that they use. This product is used for coating pots, pans, acts as a stain repellent, and of course is used to coat wiper blades.
WHO INVENTED IT
Dr. Roy J Plunkett, from New Carlisle, Ohio, was born June 26, 1910 and died May 12,1994. He got his B.A.in chemistry and later a PH.D. He was hired by the DuPont company in 1936 and retired in 1975.
HISTORY OF PTFE
The discovery was made April 6, 1938 when Dr. Plunkett was working in Deepwater, New Jersy. It was mostly luck the way He found it. He was checking up on a frozen compressed sample of tetrafluoroethylene which had polymerized into a white, waxy solid to form (PTFE). Dr. Plunkett was recognized around the world and was inducted into the Plastics Hall of Fame.
PROPERTIES OF PTFE
*It withstands high temperatures of 500F *It withstands low temperatures of -454F *Unaffected by chemicals except molten alkali metals. *Non-stick low coefficient of friction from (0.05 to 0.02). *Has high dielectric strength and surface resistivity (anti static)
We can see through this in depth look at PTFE, that it can withstand very high temperatures and very low temperatures which helps the wiper not to stick to your windshield in the winter nor wear it out in the summer from high heat, saying this, it should last about one and a half times longer than normal blades.
Since PTFE is so anti static it also reduces noise and chatter. It also is much slicker on the windshield putting less stress on the wiper motor and giving you that clear vision you have always wanted.
